The primary purpose of this weekend is to be a retreat: we want to give you the chance to take a breath in amongst the beauty of Sorrento Centre in the winter.
We’ll also be taking time to gather as a community for inspiring worship, some great games and meals together. You’ll hear from wonderful speakers, including our theme speaker (see below for more information on our theme for the weekend).
A Wizard’s Retreat is being organized by the Diocesan Youth Movement in the Diocese of New Westminster with the support of the British Columbia and Yukon Anglican Youth Movement, and alongside Sorrento Centre.
Harry Potter has been one of the best selling books of our time. This simple yet complex story has touched the hearts of many over the past decades because of its portrayal of love, friendship and loyalty in contrast to injustice, prejudice and racism. Underlying the story of Harry Potter are threads of the Gospel woven together into a tapestry of a magical world not so different from our own.
This program will explore the Harry Potter series to theologically reflect on various characters in the books and foster a deeper discussion on issues of racism/prejudice and social justice. We will explore Hogwarts Houses, Muggles, Witches and Wizards and Squibs, House Elves and of course Grindelwald and Voldemort. From there, we take headline news, the Bible and Harry Potter to see how we can develop our theological imagination and spiritual activism.
Please feel free to bring your favourite Harry Potter book and a Bible (and a costume if you want!). We will be ‘sorted’ into houses for our smaller group discussion.
